Yes
I really know how much you wanted
those potatoes
and yes,
I really now how mad you were
you couldn’t have ‘em
but I really don’t like you
that much anyway
So, fuck it!
A single log on the fire can make all the difference. If ever I were to go back in time and change something I think I’d like to not put that last log on. That’s what made the night a little too long.We stayed up watching those last embers and that’s when I said the thing I shouldn’t and that’s why he ran away and I’m pretty sure the bears got him.
We were joking around in my cousin’s finished basement all summer. She would pretend to shoot me and I’d be a bad guy and chase her and then we’d play Nintendo and try to set up her parents’ tent and ask if we could watch more TV. When she stole her older brothers play nunchuks we started our ninja fighting game. She chased me behind the bar swinging them and I ducked down and grabbed a cup and jumped out. “A-Hua!!” I yelled when I threw it. She was silent, then cried then ran upstairs, dripping blood from her nose.
I dipped my toe in. Cold, but I held it and tried to feel the lake warm up. This winter had been cold and the groundhog had lied to Terry and I. We went all the way in to town to see it. She was so, so sick. Pneumonia, I guess. Her family didn’t go to doctors. She just knew she was cold and weak and hoping that spring was soon. There wasn’t a shadow and we kissed for the first time. But Maine froze for two more weeks and Terry didn’t make it. The water in the lake felt all right, so I fuckin’ jumped in!

The coat, at first, surprised me. Later I would realize that he hadn’t meant anything by it. Later, I would realize that he wasn’t ill intentioned or intentioned at all. Of course, by then, it wouldn’t matter because the burning seagulls had started hitting the buildings.
